PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is designed for learners in the Measurement, Control and Instrumentation industry, and provides specific skills within the specialisation of an analyser mechanician.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of analytical measurement.
  • Describe the application of analytical measurement in a process plant.

This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the Measurement Control and Instrumentation environment and related fields, by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Manufacturing Engineering and Technology. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment of candidates.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent:
  • Learners are assumed to have attained competence in the NQF Level 2 National Certificate: Measurement, Control and Instrumentation.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
For the purposes of this Unit Standard:

Analysers are categorized per methods of detection and could include but is not limited to the following:
  • Catalytic Combustion, Electrochemical, Oxygen in gas, Dissolved oxygen, Titration, Infrared or Ultra Violet spectrum, Moisture measurement, Density, Thermal method, Turbidity, Chromatographic, Photometric, telemetry and colorimeter.
  • A minimum of 6 categorised methods of detection should be dealt with for competence in this unit standard.
  • Safety precautions include the use of all personal protective equipment, electrical and fire protection.
  • Statutory requirements include, but are not limited to applicable standards and National Industry and Labour Legislation.

Further Range statements are included as applied to the interpretation of specific outcomes and assessment criteria.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of analytical measurement.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Terms and units used in measurement are defined in terms of their purpose and associated ranges.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Components of measuring systems are identified and described in terms of their functions and operation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Operating principles of the measuring system are described such that the differences in applied technology are defined.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Calibration methods for measuring systems are identified in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Typical problems associated with measuring systems are identified and potential solutions are provided that will provide a workable solution to the problem.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Describe the application of analytical measurement in a process plant.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Stack monitoring systems applied on site are identified and described in terms of their strengths and weaknesses.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Site specific atmospheric emissions are identified and described in terms of measurement and impact on the environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Types of effluent monitoring are identified and described in terms of how they work.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Process monitoring systems used on site are identified and described in terms of functionality and purpose.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
