PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to explain the structure of operators and ruling body. Learners will also be able to list and explain the types of horse races which may take place. Learners will also be able to explain the different allowances which impact on the horse, rider and race. Learners will also be able to understand the special conditions and weights which impact on thoroughbred horse racing.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining types of horse races in South Africa.
  • Explaining horse racing allowances.
  • Explaining the effects of special conditions, weights and handicapping. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will be assumed competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Basic rules are those contained in the racing operator's conditions and the National Horse Racing Authority's rules and regulations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The structure of thoroughbred horse racing in South Africa is explained in terms of operators ruling body. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The types of races are explained in accordance with racing operator's conditions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Types of races may include but is not limited to maiden plate, novice plate, maiden juvenile plate, work riders race, graduation plate, progress plate, weight for age plate (WFA), plate allowance, advance plate, superior plate, conditions race, apprentice handicap races.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Each type of race is explained in accordance with operator's conditions.

    Explain horse racing allowances.

    Horse sex allowances are explained in accordance with National Horse Racing Authority rules and regulations.

    The apprentice allowance is explained in accordance National Horse Racing Authority rules and regulations.

    The impact of allowances on a horse race is explained with examples of its advantages and disadvantages.

    Explain the effects of special conditions, weights and handicapping.

    Special conditions, weights and handicapping are explained in accordance with National Horse Racing Authority rules and regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The raising of weights and weight in different types of races is explained in accordance with National Horse Racing Authority rules and regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The impact of special conditions, weights and handicapping on a horse race is explained with examples in terms of any advantages and disadvantages.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.

  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
