PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this Unit Standard will be able to provide feedback to the necessary persons regarding the performance of a race horse. They will be able to single out incidents and make the necessary judgement calls in the case of an objection.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of reading a horse race.
  • Recognising a horse in a horse race.
  • Reading the start of a horse race.
  • Reading the remainder of the horse race.
  • Completing reports related to the reading of a horse race.
  • Providing feedback regarding the performance of a race horse.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of reading a horse race and race horse performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The reasons for reading a horse race are explained in order to establish that optimal performance was achieved. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Situations to observe in the reading of the horse race are listed and explained in a case study. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The effect on a horse of the different states of going is explained in terms of safety and performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The performance of the race horse is explained with examples in terms of racing the horse. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Recognise a horse in a horse race. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Owners colours are identified by pointing them out in at least three races. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Patterns include but are not limited to:
  • Hoops, stripes, quarters, halves, shapes, chevron and colours.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Common patterns in owners colours are explained with reference to cap, sleeves and shirts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Club colours are identified by pointing them out in at least three races. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Horse is recognised at the starting stall when the race starts. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Read the start of a horse race. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    A minimum of three starts must be done. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Problems that can occur at the start of a race are listed in tabular form. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Problems could include but are not limited to horse turns head, head not releasing, gates malfunctioning, jockey not ready for the start, horse stumbles, interference from other horses, slow into stride.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Horse's break from the starting stalls is observed and explained from video footage. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Observation includes but is not limited to front on view and side on view.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    First two-hundred meters on a straight course is observed and explained from video footage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The first two-hundred meters on a turn is observed and explained from video footage. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Read the remainder of the horse race. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    A minimum of three races must be done. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Problems that can occur during the horse race are listed and explained in terms of its effects on safety and finishing position. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Problems could include but are not limited to interference from other horses, horse forced wide, horse pulling, horse difficult to restrain or over racing, not acting in the going, horse stumbles, clipping heels, horse baulked for a run, slow into stride, horse breaks down, jockey interference or intimidation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Race is observed and explained from video footage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The finish of the race is explained from video footage. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Finish is the last four-hundred meters.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Complete the reports related to the reading of the horse race. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The report is compiled using information obtained from the reading of the race. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The report is presented in the required format in accordance with National Horseracing Authority rules and guidelines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The report is distributed in the required manner in time to meet specified deadlines.
