PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard requires learners to apply safety, health and environmental principles and procedures in a jewellery production workplace to contribute to safe and healthy working environment and to assist management in implementing SHE management programmes in the workplace.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the implementation and maintenance of occupational health, safety and environmental requirements in a jewellery manufacturing workplace.
  • Demonstrate knowledge relating to the requirements of a company's occupational health, safety and environmental policies, procedures and codes.
  • Explain and exercise the requirements for handling, storage and prevention of exposure to hazardous substances that may be found in a jewellery manufacturing workplace.

    The scope and context applies to the conversion of raw materials into jewellery pieces for sale into local and international markets.

    Demonstrate knowledge relating to the requirements of a company's occupational health, safety and environmental policies, procedures and codes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Potential emergency situations in the workplace are identified and responses given to these situations are appropriate for resolving the situation with minimum negative impact on the workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Requirements for protecting personnel from the dangers of handling and storing hazardous substances in a jewellery manufacturing workplace are explained in terms of the applicable regulations and workplace specific requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Requirements for protecting personnel from the dangers of handling and storing hazardous substances must include:
  • Risk assessments.
  • Use of appropriate protective clothing and equipment.
  • Manufacturers specifications and warnings.
  • Storage practices and procedures.
