PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard requires learners to apply safety, health and environmental principles and procedures in a jewellery production workplace to contribute to safe and healthy working environment and to assist management in implementing SHE management programmes in the workplace.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the implementation and maintenance of occupational health, safety and environmental requirements in a jewellery manufacturing workplace.
  • Demonstrate knowledge relating to the requirements of a company's occupational health, safety and environmental policies, procedures and codes.
  • Explain and exercise the requirements for handling, storage and prevention of exposure to hazardous substances that may be found in a jewellery manufacturing workplace.

    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Apply basic health and safety work principles and procedures in a workplace.

    The scope and context applies to the conversion of raw materials into jewellery pieces for sale into local and international markets.

    Demonstrate knowledge relating to the requirements of a company's occupational health, safety and environmental policies, procedures and codes.

    The statutory requirements are explained in terms of applicability to occupational health, safety and environmental policies, procedures and codes of practice.

    The importance of compliance with policies, procedures and codes of practice are explained in terms of potential workplace consequences and liability.

    Resources required to implement and maintain occupational health, safety and environmental legislation in a jewellery manufacturing workplace are identified and allocated appropriately in accordance with relevant legislation.

    Training courses required to implement occupational health, safety and environmental legislation in the workplace are identified from available training programmes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Potential emergency situations in the workplace are identified and responses given to these situations are appropriate for resolving the situation with minimum negative impact on the workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Requirements for protecting personnel from the dangers of handling and storing hazardous substances in a jewellery manufacturing workplace are explained in terms of the applicable regulations and workplace specific requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Requirements for protecting personnel from the dangers of handling and storing hazardous substances must include:
  • Risk assessments.
  • Use of appropriate protective clothing and equipment.
  • Manufacturers specifications and warnings.
  • Storage practices and procedures.
  • Labelling and handling of hazardous substances.
  • Checking the condition of the substances.
  • Disposal of such substances including waste.
  • Provision of a first aid kit and treatment in the event of injury.

    The requirements for disposal of hazardous substances are explained in terms of protecting personnel, equipment and the environment.
