PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

This unit standard will enable learners to understand the theory and aural elements of music. It will ensure that qualifying learners will be able to demonstrate keyboard skills at the advanced level of difficulty.

Learner accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:

Demonstrating keyboard techniques.

Demonstrating sight reading skills.

Recognising and demonstrating different styles of music in relation to the keyboard.

Describing and analysing different music pieces.

Demonstrate advanced keyboard techniques.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

Major and natural minor scales are played with hands together, one octave ascending and descending.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

Scales includes, but is not limited to the keys of C, G, D, A.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Major, minor, triad chords and chord exercises are played.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

Finger exercises emphasizing correct finger numbering are demonstrated and practiced.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

Exercises with hands together or apart are demonstrated.

Demonstrate advanced sight reading skills.

Four different genre music pieces are chosen and demonstrated.

Music pieces include, but is not limited to:

Two sections per piece.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Rhythm according to the genre is expressed in the demonstration of the specific piece.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

Form according to the genre is expressed in the demonstration of the specific piece.

Comping according to the genre is expressed in the demonstration of the specific piece.

Describe and analyse different music pieces.

Genres are identified and named according to standard music industry practice.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Harmonic implications/chords and arpeggios are identified according to the genre.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

Melodic implications (intervals, major scales) are identified according to the genre.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

Rhythmic implications are identified according to the genre.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

Any individual wishing to be assessed, (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.

Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.

Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of Level 5 competency in the sub-field.

Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.

Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and ETQA guidelines.
