The qualifying learner will be able to describe and meaningfully experience music of various cultures and aurally distinguish between a number of genres and styles.

Learner accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Describing the cultural contexts of world music.
  • Identifying and describing the elements of world music.
  • Identifying and describing the characteristics that determine cultural context.
  • Describing how styles evolved and spread globally.

    Describe the cultural contexts of world music.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Music of two Western cultures is identified and described according to their cultural contexts. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Western cultures include, but are not limited to Europe, North America etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Music of two non-western cultures is identified and described according to their cultural contexts. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Non-western cultures include, but are not limited to South America, West Indies, Australasia, etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Music of different cultures is compared and differences identified focusing on the use of keys, chords, tempo and harmony.

    Melodic and harmonic differences in music cultures are described.

    Vocal and/or instrument characteristics of music cultures are described and noted.

    Rhythm, dynamics and metre in different styles and genres are analysed and described.

    Melodic and harmonic characteristics in different styles and genres are analysed and described.

    Vocals and/or instruments used in different music cultures are described and noted.

    Social and historical background of at least five different musical styles and genres are described.

    Music development of at least five styles is described.

    Origins of music related to these styles are described and compared.

    Aspects of origins includes, but are not limited to composers, performers, promoters etc.

    Role of each style played in its local culture is described according to its cultural context.

    Geographical distribution of these styles is described according to culture. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Communication via these styles through communal music making, concerts, electronic media and recording is compared. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The impact of these styles is compared according to influence on the music industry. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual wishing to be assessed, (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of Level 5 competency in the sub-field.
