PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who operate in the aviation industry at the level of aviation support must understand the most important aviation terminology, concepts, codes and processes. They will have knowledge of how the various processes and components of an airport work cumulatively to deliver aviation services.

Learners credited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Explaining and using terminology pertaining to aviation.
  • Differentiating between operator, city and airport codes.
  • Explaining aviation concepts and the value of information on airline timetables/rosters.
  • Discussing aspects contributing to the overall services within aviation.

    Explain and use terminology pertaining to aviation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Aviation terminology is used to describe aviation operations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Aviation terminology includes but is not limited to rosters, passenger and cargo manifests, aircraft types, inter-station communication, ground equipment and directional orientation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Aviation terminology is spelt and pronounced correctly to ensure clarity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The phonetic alphabet is explained in terms of its use in the aviation industry. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Aviation terminology is used correctly when communicating orally and in writing within a variety of contexts. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Contexts include but are not limited to the passenger handling, cargo handling, cabin crew, aviation security, ramp handling contexts.

    Abbreviations common to aviation and to the workplace of the learner are understood and used in the correct context.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The concept and implications of traffic rights are explained with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES 
    'Traffic rights' refers to agreements between countries regarding flight routes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The concept of slot times is discussed in terms of the financial impact they have on airlines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The concepts of universal coordinated time and time zones are explained, using examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The concept of minimum connecting time is explained to show how it impacts at different hubs.

    Non-adherence to scheduled arrival and departure times is discussed in terms of the financial impact on airlines.

    Code-share agreements are discussed in terms of their benefits and the potential to facilitate flight arrangements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Processes related to airport operations are identified and described in terms of how each process contributes to the functioning of an airport. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Related processes include but are not limited to ramp, passenger, cargo load control, aviation safety and security.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The relationships between the processes are described in terms of their common elements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Major constituent elements of an airport/airfield are identified and discussed in terms of their respective importance, functions and access limitations.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
