PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is useful for people who intend following a career in the diamond processing sector and who are required to operate machines for bruting diamond gemstones.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify the equipment and tools used to brute diamond gemstones and describe their application.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the structure of diamond gemstones and the implications for operating bruting machines.
  • Operate a bruting machine.
  • Maintain a bruting machine.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth of the mining and minerals sector, particularly in the aspect of beneficiation.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding of the diamond processing industry in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Advanced use of a loupe to examine a diamond gemstone.
  • Identify polishing grains and planes in diamond gemstones.
  • Explain the requirements for security of diamonds. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope and context applies to the conversion of rough diamond gemstones into cut and polished diamond gemstones for sale into local and international markets.

    This unit standard applies to persons processing any type of sawn or makeable diamond gemstones under minimal supervision.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify the equipment and tools used to brute diamond gemstones and describe their application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The tools and their components used for bruting diamond gemstones are identified and their use in different applications is explained in terms of key features, applications and methods for use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The process for bruting rough diamonds in automatic machines or by hand is explained in terms of the properties of diamonds and the effect of using diamonds to cut other diamonds. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Practices are explained to maintain good housekeeping, safety in the workplace and care of equipment in line with workplace specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of deviating from workplace specific practices are described in terms of potential impact on health, safety, equipment, products and productivity. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate knowledge of the structure of diamond gemstones and the implications for the operating bruting machines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Two, three and four points in diamond gemstones are identified for different diamond types. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Problems that can be encountered when operating different types of bruting machines are described in terms of types of problems, key features, implications for bruting and methods to overcome such problems. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The types of bruting machines must include:
  • Bruting or rondisting by automatic machines.
  • Bruting or rondisting by hand.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Hints and techniques for operating bruting machines are explained in terms of different applications and the consequences of using inappropriate techniques. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Operate a bruting machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment is selected and applied according to required standards of occupational health and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The appropriate bruting equipment is selected for the type of bruting to be carried out and checked to ensure it is ready for use. Any problems encountered are dealt with in terms of workplace specific procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Appropriate bruting equipment must include:
  • Bruting by automatic equipment.
  • Bruting by hand equipment.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Machines are set up for use and tested to ensure operation will result in the desired outcomes for the selected operation. Any problems encountered are dealt with in terms of workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Stones are set, located and secured in the chuck head of the bruting machine In accordance with manufacturer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The operation of the machine is checked to ensure that the bruting activity will give the required results.

    Maintain a bruting machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Bruting equipment is examined for wear and tear, lubrication and cleanliness in accordance with workplace and manufacturer's specific instructions. Any problems encountered are dealt with in terms of workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Communication and recording of condition of equipment is carried out in accordance with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Bruting equipment is checked to see that it is operating according to requirements. Remedial action is taken where necessary in accordance with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Effective communication takes place with the operator of the equipment in accordance with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Bruting equipment is locked out and examined after use to ascertain its condition in accordance with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Bruting equipment is examined, checked and overhauled at the prescribed intervals according to workplace specific procedures and the recommendations of the manufacturer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Records of maintenance of bruting equipment are kept in accordance with workplace specific procedures.
