PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard enables health workers to develop and maintain a community based rehabilitation programme.

It includes supporting and assisting workers implementing rehabilitation to carry out their programmes effectively and efficiently and to provide or obtain assistance when necessary.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Assisting in organising and providing a basic rehabilitation programme to people with a disability in the area.
  • Assisting in providing basic rehabilitation intervention.
  • Assisting in providing rehabilitation to specific client groups.
  • Promoting adherence to record keeping norms and standards.
  • Promoting quality in treatment delivery.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard includes but is not limited to knowledge pertaining to the different types of disabling conditions and the relevant intervention for each, how to identify people with a disability in the community, how to maintain adequate records and compile reports, run learning groups and provide assistance to workers delivering rehabilitation. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Assist in organising and providing a basic rehabilitation programme to people with a disability in the area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Help and advice is obtained from organisations of people with a disability on organising the service. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Assistance is provided in planning and implementing disability surveys carried out by those involved in rehabilitation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Information from disability surveys is collected and collated in order to compile a register of persons with a disability in the area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Assistance is provided in establishing a work schedule detailing the provision of a service to the identified people. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The establishment of organisations/groups of people with disabilities is established in order to ensure ongoing support. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The programmes are facilitated in order to provide an awareness of disability and disability issues in the community. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Assist in providing basic rehabilitation intervention. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Rehabilitation includes but is not limited to:
  • Training in activities of daily living, intervention to prevent deformities, improving mobility and reducing pain, assisting and supporting a client with a breathing problem.

    The client's assessment is monitored and a problem list compiled between the worker, the client and family. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Assistance is provided in treatment planning to include all relevant aspects of rehabilitation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ongoing intervention and support is monitored and evaluated when needed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Intervention is reported on and the client referred when necessary. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Appropriate teaching/learning techniques are applied in the various rehabilitation situations. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Assist in providing rehabilitation to specific client groups.

    Client groups include, but are not limited to, children with disabilities, adults with physical disabilities, clients with psychiatric disorders.

    Client assessment for the specific diagnosis is monitored on an ongoing basis.

    Assistance is provided in prioritising problems with reference to diagnosis, family circumstances and age of the client.

    Assistance is provided with treatment planning according to the diagnosis and assessment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Specialist assistance is obtained and the client referred when necessary.

    Promote adherence to record keeping norms and standards.

    A schedule of the workers under supervision is monitored and reported on a daily basis.

    A mentoring and supervisory relationship is established with the client and relevant family members to sustain success of rehabilitation programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Client treatment is monitored regularly to determine progress. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Aspects of treatment problems are discussed and solutions sought between the worker, the client and his family. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Group learning discussions are established and facilitated on an ongoing basis to effectively support quality treatment delivery. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Principles of ethics are constantly applied to record keeping and storage, maintaining client confidentiality, observing client rights, obtaining informed consent.

    Specialist assistance is sought and obtained when necessary.
