PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard will be able to apply the principles of sport coaching to the development of children and youth at beginner level. Learner competence will include communication skills, the ability to work with children and youth as well as the ability to know when and how refer to appropriate professionals to support the development of the aspiring athletes.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Explain the ethos of coaching children and youth.
  • Identify effective coaching behaviours that influence children and adolescents.
  • Coach a specific sport.
  • Explain the role of sport science and sports medicine in the development of sport performers.

    The use of a coach in sport is explained with respect to the role in training children and youth. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The philosophy of coaching is explained with respect to its role in society. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The relevance of coaching is discussed with respect to its benefits to children and youth. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify effective coaching behaviours that influence children and adolescents. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Utilise appropriate screening and assessment tools to determine the abilities of athletes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The responsibilities of the coach are described with respect to being a role model. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The differences between coaching children and coaching adolescents are explained in terms of motivation, training regimes and routines and type of learning applicable to each. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Appropriate communication is identified relevant to coaching children and adolescents.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The basic techniques that a player needs to be able to execute in a specific sport are identified together with the correct way of performing them. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Training routines to develop the skills are planned for a specific group of children and/or adolescents. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The required resources are identified and made available for each training session. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Training sessions are held to develop the required techniques and skills. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Matches are arranged to give learners the opportunity to play the sport being coached. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Opportunities are created for talented earners or those with a particular interest in the sport to received advanced training and skills development. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Use is made of members of the community to assist with the coaching where applicable.

    Explain the role of sport science and sports medicine in the development of sport performers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The role of a sport science team is described with respect to sport performance. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to dietician, sport psychologist, sports medicine physician, biokineticists, physiotherapist, sports conditioning trainer.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The functions of sport science and sport medicine are explained with respect to their roles in assisting performers. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed against this unit standard for the purposes of achieving credits, including through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution recognised for assessment purposes by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA), or one with an appropriate Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard, or assessing this unit standard, for the purposes of achieving credits must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.
