PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner is capable of supplying the customer with the correct heavy vehicle and add-on products in terms of the technical and cost specifications applicable to the use/purpose of the vehicle.

This unit standard makes provision for the automotive retail industry with special reference to providing options on heavy vehicles inclusive of but not limited to commercial vehicles designated as Rigid, Truck Tractors and Trailers. This unit standard is also designed to make provision for earth moving equipment such as bulldozers, scrapers and therefore the sale of all Heavy Commercial Vehicles and Earth Moving Equipment.

On achievement of this unit standard, the learner will be able to:
  • Establish customer needs in terms of proposing a specific heavy vehicle.
  • Match a specific vehicle's ratings to client specifications.
  • Determine the need and specifications of add-on products for Heavy Vehicles.
  • Calculate the estimated vehicle operating costs.

    Establish customer needs in terms of proposing a specific heavy vehicle.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The customer's needs are determined in relation to the core business of the prospective client. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Needs are determined by using open ended questioning techniques.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The customer's needs are evaluated against current heavy vehicles in the proposed client's organisation with reference to manufacturer specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The main purpose of the proposed heavy vehicle is verified against client needs by asking closed questioning techniques to ensure compatibility of the vehicle.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Various vehicles on offer are identified with reference to matching client needs in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

    Match a specific vehicle's ratings to client specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Given the main purpose and use of a heavy vehicle establish the vehicle ratings and specifications required to meet the needs of the client. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Vehicle ratings may include but are not limited to gear ratios; diff ratios; power bands; torque; rev limits; load ratings; capacity and physical attributes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Manufacturer ratings and specifications of various heavy vehicles are used to identify the appropriate vehicle for the customer within the company given timeframes and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A Heavy Vehicle is identified in terms of matching customer requirements and the main purpose of the Heavy Vehicle. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Determine the need and specifications of add-on products for Heavy Vehicles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The gaps of the appropriate vehicle for the job are determined in accordance with manufacturer specifications and client needs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The add-ons required to the standard vehicle are determined in terms of meeting the needs of the client. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Various types of add-on products for Heavy Vehicle's can be described in terms of their features and benefits. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Calculate the estimated vehicle operating costs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Given various cost factors calculate the vehicles operating costs per km or per hour. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Given the vehicles standard maintenance costs calculate these with reference to the environment within which the vehicle has to operate. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The current vehicles standard maintenance and operating costs are determined with reference to the last fiscal year. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Utilising the new operating and maintenance costs calculate the savings on current maintenance and operating costs.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed against the unit standard (including through RPL) may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA), or one with an appropriate memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the relevant ETQA.
