PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner is capable of establishing the status and value of a used vehicle with a view to bring such vehicle into the organisations used vehicle trading stock and to enhance the buying/selling opportunity of another vehicle.

This unit standard makes provision for the automotive retail industry with special reference to appraising and valuating second hand vehicles in the following categories; Light commercial vehicles; passenger vehicles; recreational vehicles; Motor cycles; Tri-cycles; Quad cycles; Boats, light and heavy commercial vehicles, agricultural vehicles and Off Road (ATR) vehicles. The purchase of used vehicles includes local and purchases from abroad.

On achievement of this unit standard, the learner will be able to:
  • Verify the status of the used vehicle(s).
  • Prepare an offer for the used vehicle.
  • Agree a final offer to purchase.

    Vehicle ownership is established in accordance with company policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Restrictions affecting transfer of ownership is established according to company policy and procedure. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Restrictions may include but are not limited to outstanding financial commitments and or lease agreements.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Vehicle status information is recorded according to company procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Vehicle status information may include but is not limited to mileage, date of initial registration, make and model of the vehicle.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Vehicle condition information is recorded in accordance with company policies and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Vehicle condition information may include but is not limited to general condition, condition of paint and upholstery, the inclusion of non-standard features, mechanical condition and tyre condition.

    Prepare an offer for the used vehicle.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The recommended trade value is determined in accordance with company policy and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Recommended trade value may be obtained from but is not limited to establishing current supply and demand from trade magazines, suggested retail booklets, trade newspapers and market information.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The value of any optional extras fitted to the vehicle is determined in accordance with company policy and procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reconditioning costs are determined according to company policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The final offer for the vehicle is calculated in accordance with company policies and procedures and financial practices. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The final offer may include but is not limited to a trade in offer or an outright purchase offer.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Agree a final offer to purchase. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The final offer is presented to the vendor in accordance with company policies and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Presenting the offer must include but is not limited to responding to vendor queries, negotiating and agreeing the offer.
  • Vendor may include but is not limited to used car retail and wholesalers, auctions, private customers and trade-ins.

    The documentation is completed in accordance with company policies and procedures.

    The signatures are obtained on the documentation according to company policies and procedures.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed against the unit standard (including through RPL) may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA), or one with an appropriate memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the relevant ETQA.
