PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful for persons that will be involved in the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment in the mining industry and specifically to fault-find and repair DC powered machines.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the factors critical to fault-finding and repairing DC powered machines.
  • Prepare to fault-find and repair a DC powered machine.
  • Fault-find and repair the DC powered machine.
  • Test the machine and prepare for operation.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth of the mining and minerals sector.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding of repairing a rectiformer panel in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

    It is assumed that the learners are already competent in the ability to:
  • Use hand held test instruments at NQF Level 4.
  • Use relevant hand tools at NQF Level 4.

    The explanation of the method to safely fault find and repair the electrical system of a DC powered machine is explained with reference acceptable engineering standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The electrical components are identified and their function explained with reference to a circuit diagram. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The function and use of the relevant test instruments are explained with reference to fault finding and repairing the electrical system of DC powered machines. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare to fault-find and repair a DC powered machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Permission is obtained in accordance with company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The required personal protective equipment is selected, examined and used in a manner that protects the individual in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tools, material and test equipment required are selected, examined and transported in accordance with laid down standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Information required for fault finding and repairing the electrical system is obtained and used in accordance with the task requirements.

    The machine to be repaired is identified in accordance with specified requirement.

    Workplace-based hazards and associated significant occupational health and safety-related risks are identified and dealt with in accordance with hazard identification procedures.

    The consequences of not preparing to fault-find and repair the DC powered machine in line with company procedures and manufacturers specifications are explained in terms of potential effect on the environment, occupational health, safety and production.

    Tools and test equipment are used in accordance with company procedures and manufacturers specifications.

    The power supply is isolated and made safe in accordance with company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The fault is located and the causes are identified from the test results, fault indications and observations in accordance with accepted fault finding techniques.

    The fault is rectified and the causes are eliminated in accordance with company policy.

    Hazards and associated significant risks directly related to faultfinding and repairing the machine are identified and addressed in accordance with hazard identification procedures.

    Interpersonal interaction is positive, consistent with company policy, promotes effective teamwork, and avoids dysfunctional conflict. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    The consequences of not faultfinding and repairing the machine in line with company procedures and manufacturers specifications are explained in terms of potential effect on the environment, occupational health, safety and production.

    The machine is operated to determine if it is functioning correctly in accordance with company procedures and manufacturers specifications.

    The workplace is cleaned to comply with specified housekeeping practices.

    Tools, material and equipment are cleaned, inspected and stored in accordance with laid down procedures.

    The feedback report complies with company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The consequences of not testing the DC powered machine and not preparing for operation in line with company procedures and manufacturers specifications are explained in terms of potential effect on the environment, occupational health, safety and production.

    Notes to Assessors:

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, direct, authentic, sufficient, systematic, open and consistent.
