PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is for persons that need to use basic electronic test instruments to verify signals in circuits in order to perform fault finding for corrective measures.

Learners credited with this Unit Standard are capable of:
  • Demonstrating knowledge of test instruments.
  • Setting up electronic instruments.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of measuring techniques.
  • Interpreting the results of the readings. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication skills at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematics at NQF Level 3.
  • Computer literacy at NQF Level 3. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Functions may include but are not limited to semiconductor testing, continuity testing, digital circuitry testing, temperature testing, AC and DC circuits.

    Demonstrate knowledge of test instruments.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Various test instruments are identified and distinguished in terms of their use. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Various instruments include but are not limited to multi-meter, oscilloscope, function generator and bench power supplies.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The range of each test instrument is identified and described in order choose the correct instrument. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Set up electronic instruments. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Terminals are linked in accordance with specific measurements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Terminals refer to but are not limited to leads, test probes and link settings.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Function and range selection is conducted in accordance with the measurement requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Oscilloscope calibration is performed prior to measurements in order to validate readings.

    Demonstrate knowledge of measuring techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An understanding of voltage, current and resistance measurements is demonstrated using a multi-meter. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Knowledge of different wave forms, frequencies, voltages using an oscilloscope is demonstrated with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Knowledge of the use of power supplies is demonstrated for testing purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Knowledge of the use of function generators in providing specific frequencies and wave forms is demonstrated by means of signal measurements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Interpret the results of the readings.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Circuit diagram symbols are interpreted in order to determine correct component values. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Readings taken are interpreted and compared with the manufacture's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Information gathered from results are recorded for future use and/or corrective action. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA`s policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise.
