PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering, Generation, Distribution, Transmission, Construction, Mining and Renewable Energy Sectors. This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding required for the installation, connecting and testing of direct-on-line AC rotating machines and control gear in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

A person credited with this unit standard will be capable of:
  • Planning the installation process.
  • Installing direct-on-line AC rotating machines and control gear.
  • Connecting and commissioning direct-on-line AC rotating machines and control gear.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within all sectors of the electrical engineering field. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent:
  • Introduction to industry and operational area (work environment).
  • Use of relevant electrical testing and measuring equipment and hand tools/power tools.
  • Knowledge and application of safe working procedures.
  • Knowledge of elementary electrical diagrams for the connecting of electrical apparatus.
  • Basic safety procedures related to tools and electricity. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The range of this unit standard applies to the following direct-on-line AC rotating machines and control gear:

    Single phase AC motors which may include, but are not limited to:
  • Capacitor start, capacitor-start capacitor-run, shaded pole, and universal motors.
  • Alternators.

    Single phase AC control gear may include, but are not limited to:
  • Rotary switch controller.
  • Reversing contactors.

    Installation and commissioning of single phase direct-on-line AC rotating machines and control gear may include, but are not limited to:
  • Connecting different types of single phase motors to a rotary switch controller.
  • Connecting different types of single phase motors to reversing contactors.

    Three phase AC motors which may include, but are not limited to:
  • Three phase squirrel cage motors.

    Three phase AC control gear may include, but are not limited to:
  • Three phase magnetic circuit breakers used for full voltage starting of AC motors.
  • Three phase contactors with auxiliaries, stop and start stations, limit and sensory switches used for full voltage starting of AC motors.
  • Three phase protection units.
  • Indicator lamps, volt meters, ammeters.

    Installation and commissioning of three phase direct-on-line AC rotating machines and control gear may include, but are not limited to:
  • Connecting a three-phase squirrel cage motor to a direct-on line control system with one or more stop and start station.
  • Connecting a three-phase squirrel cage motor to a direct-on line forward and reverse control system with one or more stop and start station.

    Direct-on-line AC rotating machines and control gear are correctly selected and tested according to statutory requirements.

    Safety procedures are obtained and interpreted to meet task requirements.

    The required personal protective equipment is selected, examined and used in a manner that protects the individual in accordance with specified requirements.

    Safety and correct environmental practices are followed before, during and after the maintenance and repair activities according to statutory and worksite requirements.

    Measuring and testing equipment, and hand tools selected is used correctly and safely in accordance with manufacture's instructions.

    Tests are carried out according to worksite procedures and statutory requirements.

    Final testing and commissioning is carried out and documentation completed in accordance with specified requirements.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
