PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard has been developed for the GIS occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement by gaining GIS skills leading to qualification based on unit standards. A person who has successfully completed this unit standard will have an understanding of how to process and or create simple cartographic models.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Understand the concept of cartographic modeling.
  • Interpret and execute an existing, simple cartographic model.
  • Understand and explain the stages in the development of a cartographic model.
  • Develop a cartographic model. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in the following:
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 5.
  • Communication at NQF Level 5.
  • Perform basic spatial and hybrid queries.

    Different cartographic modeling methodologies are understood and explained within the context of a GIS.

    Including but not limited to Spiral, cascade/waterfall.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Different types of inputs and outputs are understood and explained in relation to cartographic modeling.

    Including but not limited to Vector data, raster data, alphanumerical data, and understanding that an output of one equation may be the input for another.

    Different types of operations and equations are understood and explained in relation to cartographic modeling.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Commonly used symbology used in cartographic models is understood and explained within the context of GIS standards and specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tomlin's original model and any other model available to the student (E.g. IDRISI model, ESRI model, ERDAS model).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The holistic process addressed by the cartographic model is understood and explained within the context of GIS requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The individual equations, including their parameters, of simple cartographic models are understood and explained within the context of GIS requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    E.g. Buffer operations can be single or multiple and require a buffer distance.

    The error propagation through cartographic models is understood and explained within the context of GIS requirements.

    The model is executed correctly and the validity of the result can be demonstrated under supervision.

    The problem to be addressed by a cartographic model is understood and explained in relation to the GISc analysis. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Including but not limited to analysis, conceptual model.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The inputs to the cartographic model and their required parameters are identified and explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Parameters include but are not limited to geometric scale, resolution, accuracy, precision, associated alphanumerical data, data type, scale of measurement, area of interest.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The expected outputs from the cartographic model are identified and explained as well as their desired parameters. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Parameters include but are not limited to geometric scale, resolution, accuracy, precision, associated alphanumerical data, data type, scale of measurement, area of interest.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The computational processes to be used in the cartographic model are identified and explained as well as their required parameters.

    Perform data conversions between different spatial data formats within a GI system environment.

    The information needed to successfully use spatial data exchange formats are explained within a GI system environment.

    Different formats for exchanging spatial data are understood and explained within a GI system environment.

  • ArcView SHP file set.
  • MapInfo file set.
  • ASCII data in the form of the Open GIS Consortium's Simple Feature Standard for SQL (SFS1).
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Data is converted using different file formats within a GI system environment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    All of the formats listed above are to be used as both source and target in different conversions.

    Details of the conversion process are reported in metadata statements within a GI system environment.
