PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for individuals dealing with the provision of advice and the selling and promotion of colour cosmetic products/product ranges through customer interaction in a retail environment.

Individuals credited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate knowledge applicable to colour cosmetics in order to add value to customer service through the identification of most appropriate products, the correct communication of product features, benefits, use and application according to client/customer needs.

Product as well as cosmetology knowledge gained will enable effective problem solving, trouble-shooting and the addressing of customer needs in accordance with the standard operational procedures and specifications of the product and the organisation.

Qualifying learners will be capable of:
  • Demonstrating knowledge of basic make-up techniques.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of colour cosmetic products.
  • Promoting colour cosmetic products to meet client needs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The functions of specific colour cosmetic products are described in accordance with their purpose, advantages and disadvantages. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Colour cosmetic products may include but are not limited to oil, water, powder and cream based products which incorporate but are not limited to, mascara, eye-liner and eye-pencils, blush, eye-shadows, lipsticks, lip-liners and lip-gloss.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The basic steps involved in make-up application are identified, described and demonstrated according to standard industry practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Make-up application may include but is not limited to:
  • Foundation, concealer, blush, eye shadow, eyeliner, mascara, and lipstick.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Suitable make up techniques for specific situations and occasions are described and demonstrated according to standard industry practice.

    Specific situations and occasions may include but are not limited to day time, night time, wedding, party.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Specific make-up techniques to address individual make-up requirements are identified and demonstrated according to standard industry practice.

    Make-up techniques may include but are not limited to the application of relevant products for the facial, cheek, eye, eye-lash, eye-brow and lips as well as the correct application of products in these areas to address specific individual challenges and application appropriate to life-style, age and occasion.

    Suitable product colour choices are identified and described as they apply to specific skin tone and individual colouring.

    Personal appearance and grooming is explained as it relates to self image. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Specific colour cosmetic products suitable to the individual's skin type, colouring and make-up are recommended according to customer needs.

    Use and application of cosmetic products are explained in a way that is understood by the client. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Individual customers' skin types, colouring and requirements are assessed to provide advice according to standard industry practice. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance (ETQA) body.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.
