PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for people who work in the wholesale and retail industry who need to maintain a safe and secure environment in the workplace.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be prepared to respond to an emergency situation and incidents should they arise in the outlet. They will also be able to maintain customer safety and will have the ability to address suspicious behaviour within the work environment.

Qualifying learners will be capable of:
  • Explaining how to maintain a safe and secure work area.
  • Responding to an emergency situation.
  • Explaining how to deal with theft in a wholesale and retail outlet.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of maintaining a safe working environment for staff and customers is explained in relation to the effect of unsafe conditions on the outlet. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The types of required safety equipment are identified as per company policy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The locations of safety equipment and emergency exits are identified in the outlet. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Safety procedures in the work environment are described with examples from own area of activity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The importance of securing areas from unauthorised access is explained in relation to the effect it will have on safety and security of the business. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Respond to emergency situations. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Emergency situations include, but is not limited to:
  • Fire, robbery, customer/staff injured in the store, power failure and bomb threats.

    Possible emergency situations are described in terms of the impact they could have on the outlet.

    The emergency and safety telephone numbers are located and the use thereof explained according to organisational policy and procedures.

    Responses to emergency situations are explained according to organisational procedures.

    Response to emergency situations is demonstrated according to organisational procedures.

    The behaviour that could indicate the intention to steal is described as it applies to the outlet. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Procedures to follow in the event of identifying suspicious behaviour/persons are explained as they apply to the outlet. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Procedures in the event of observing a theft are explained in terms of legal and organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of not following legal and organisational requirements in the event of suspecting theft is explained in terms of the impact on all role players.

    Role players includes but is not limited to:
  • Suspect, staff, other customers and the outlet.

    The ways that fraud could take place are explained as they apply to own area of activity.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance (ETQA) body.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
