PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is to enable security within the slots area to be maintained. The individual should develop the ability to maintain own area of responsibility, identifying breaches in slot security and understanding the importance of reporting them timeously.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Identify security and safety hazards in a gaming area.
  • Understand organisational procedure for maintaining safety and security in a gaming area.
  • Identify areas of access.
  • Deal with problems in a gaming area. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical literacy at NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Safety hazards: Signage, electrical, chairs, broken glass, torn carpets, obstacles, emergency exit doors, suspicious people, items or packages.
  • Company procedures: Numbered stationery, emergency exit doors, keys and locks, machines, currency acceptor and drop box doors, suspicious or underage persons.
  • Access areas: Safes/vaults, key control area, back of house areas, cashiering booths, bars, computerised systems.

    Identify security and safety hazards in a gaming area.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Areas and actions that might result in security and/or safety risks are identified and ways to minimise or eliminate them are drawn up. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of reporting these hazards timeously is explained in terms of preventing disasters, injury to staff and customers as well ensuring a smooth operational environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The legislation and regulations relating to occupational health and safety and security prevention are explained in terms of the casino environment. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Understand organisational procedure for maintaining safety and security in a gaming area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Ways of maintaining security within the slots area is explained with specific reference to organisational policy and procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The security areas on the slots floor are pointed out, outlining the significance and responsibility of each. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Access and behaviour of by patrons is explained in terms of preventing and controlling emergencies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of communication between surveillance, security and relevant staff is explained with regard to security in the slots area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The appropriate chain of command and course of action is explained in the case of breaches of security. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    A plan for the improvement of security within a gaming area and/or workplace is drawn up to decrease unwanted incidents.

    Identify areas of access.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Own area of responsibility is defined with reference to the overall security plan of the organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Areas of limited access to certain personnel are identified using the layout of the floor plan of the casino. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An explanation is given of why it is necessary to grant only certain personnel access to certain areas of the casino. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Aspects of access such as key control, key card control and electronic devices are discussed in the light of access control. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Deal with problems in a gaming area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Electronic gaming machines are checked to determine whether they are being used in accordance with company rules and regulations and not subjected to fraudulent actions on the part of staff or clients. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Specific action to be taken with regard to lost and found items is described, with reference to organisational policy and procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The action to be taken with regard to theft and known, barred, persons and loiterers is described using examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Unusual situations and actions involving staff or customers are identified and reported to the appropriate person for immediate resolution.
