PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is for learners within the bomb disposal, explosives, pyrotechnics, demolitions and blasting environment who need to shown an understanding of the use of electronic systems within explosive devices. Learners will be able to identify different electronic systems in terms of their uses, applications, properties and functions within firing trains. The competencies achieved by the learner in this Unit Standard will lead to a safer society for South African citizens.

A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Describe electronic systems.
  • Explain the functions of electronic systems.
  • Compile a drawing of electronic systems.
  • Set up electronic systems.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that the learner has the following knowledge and skills:
  • Communication at NQF Level 4.
  • Physical Science at NQF Level 4.
  • The Unit Standard "Demonstrate knowledge of blasting accessories" at NQF Level 5.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Electronic systems may include electric and electronic systems.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
    Describe electronic systems.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
An explanation is given of the types of electronic systems according to their properties as specified by manufacturer's specifications.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
  • Types refers to but are not limited to mechanical electronic systems, electrical electronic systems and non-electrical systems.
  • Properties refers but are not limited to resistance, voltage output and burning speed.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
A description is given of the equipment used in electronic systems according to their purposes.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Equipment refers to but is not limited to shot exploders and blasting cables.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
A description is given of the electronic systems according to their uses and applications.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Uses may also refer to the various uses such as in a bomb disposal context.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
An explanation is given of the electronic systems in terms of their limitations and advantages.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Explain the functions of electronic systems.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
An explanation is given of electronic systems in a blasting operation for the successful initiation of the explosives train.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
An explanation is given of the placement of electronic systems in an explosive train for safe initiation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Electronic systems are handled in line with safety and manufacturer's specifications.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Safety refers to but is not limited to safety prescripts as contained in Material Safety Data Sheets.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Electronic systems are handled in line with legal prescripts.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Legal prescripts refers to but are not limited to legal prescripts as contained in the Explosives Acts and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Compile a drawing of an electronic system.
    OUTCOME RANGE
An electronic and non-electronic drawing must be drawn and they are to include illustrations of relays, detonators, equipment and safety fuses.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Individual electronic systems are illustrated in a schematic drawing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Placement of electronic systems in an explosive train is illustrated in a schematic drawing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Electronic and non-electronic systems are differentiated within the schematic drawing of the explosive train.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
    Set up electronic systems.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
An electronic system is set up according to given specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The electronic system is tested for continuity.
