PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners within the retail, wholesales and related distribution environments such as managers, cashiers, salespersons and security officers. Such learners would on completion of this unit standard be able to demonstrate the skills required to prevent and cope with armed robberies in the workplace. The learner will be able to respond, behave and react to the events that are related to an armed robbery before, during and after this type of incident.

The qualifying learner will be able to:
  • Apply preventative measures in order to reduce the likelihood of an armed robbery occurring.
  • React appropriately to armed robbery incidents in a given scenario.
  • Follow armed robbery post-event procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Apply preventative measures in order to reduce the likelihood of an armed robbery occurring. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    High risk areas and events are identified in order to apply preventative measures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • High risk areas may include but are not limited to entrances, exits, parking lots, high risk merchandise and cash handling points.
  • High risk events may include but are not limited to deliveries and collections of cash and high value items, opening and closing times and shift/staff change over.

    Alertness and observation techniques are applied in high risk areas, at high risk events and during routine day-to-day business. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Observation techniques may include but are not limited to identification of suspects.

    Suspicious persons and behaviours are reported according to standard operating procedures.

    Cash and asset control measures are identified in accordance with standard operating procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An explanation is given of behaviour to reduce risk to staff and customers in an armed robbery situation by giving examples of positive and negative actions and their possible consequences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The characteristics and features of the perpetrator/s are observed without the perpetrator/s being aware of it. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The sequence of events is observed and memorised during armed robbery incidents. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Follow armed robbery post-event procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An explanation is given of when to raise an alarm in terms of what methods to use and who to contact. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The scene of the incident is assessed to identify persons in need of assistance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The scene of the incident is preserved in order to contribute towards the integrity of the evidence. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Information regarding the incident is provided to the relevant authorised persons.

    Information may include but is not limited to a description of perpetrator/s, sequence of events, witnesses and possible items of evidence.
