PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is aimed at learners required to assist managers in achieving predetermined management objectives relating to the preservation of indigenous plant resources. Achieving this unit standard will enhance the knowledge required for further education in indigenous botany.

The learner will be able to:
  • Identify common and threatened indigenous plants and plant parts that are present in the area of operation.
  • Determine the economic value of common indigenous species for purposes of propagation and re-introduction.
  • Propagate and re-introduce indigenous plants in the area of operation.
  • Perform basic plant monitoring techniques in support of propagation and re-introduction initiatives.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify common and threatened indigenous plants in the area of operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An overview is given of the indigenous plant species present in the area of operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Threatened indigenous plant species are pointed out along with the degree of the threat to each species. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The particular plants and plant parts that are of interest to poachers are pointed out with a view to combating illegal activities within the area of operation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Determine the economic value of common indigenous species for purposes of propagation and re-introduction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Knowledge of local indigenous plants is applied in order to assign these an economic value. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Economic value is determined based on demand, relative abundance and ease of propagation of the plant.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An economic value is assigned to local indigenous species based on the length of time required for propagation of the plant. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Feasibility of propagation and re-introduction is determined based on the economic value and time required for propagation in the area of operation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A variety of techniques are applied to various indigenous species within the area of operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The generic integrity of indigenous flora is considered in the planning of re-introduction and translocation of plants in the area of operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Propagated plants are translocated to designated areas in the wild in support of the re-location of indigenous species. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Perform basic plant monitoring techniques in support of propagation and re-introduction initiatives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The wheel point method is used to undertake plant monitoring in support of the re-introduction of indigenous species in the area of operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The foot point method is used to undertake plant monitoring in support of the re-introduction of indigenous species in the area of operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Line transects are used to monitor woody and herbaceous layers in support of the re-introduction of indigenous species. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Basic quadrant methods are used to undertake plant monitoring in support of the re-introduction of indigenous species.

  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements.
  • Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
