  • Explain the rationale for game capture and removal within the framework of the management plan for the area of operation.
  • Participate in the planning of game capture and removal operations using applicable techniques.
  • Execute the game capture and removal operation.
  • Collect biological samples, scientific data and where required fit monitoring devices to captured game.
  • Prepare information to contribute to the compilation of an organisation's report on the game capture and removal operation.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that the learner is competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO):

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING
    Operate in a team:
  • Cooperation, collaboration and the correct implementation of directions from supervisors or conservation managers are all essential to success at game capture and removal operations.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING
    Organise and manage own activities:
  • In learning how to collect and handle specimens, opportunities for learning self-organisation and management skills will undoubtedly arise. In order to collect scientific data and to handle that data correctly it is essential that the learner be well organised and methodical.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING
    Communication:
  • Effective communication is required for the planiing and execution of game capture and removal operations.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE
    Use of science and technology:
  • The correct use of equipment and technolgoy is essential in the handling of the collection of scientific samples.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING
See the world as a set of interrelated systems:
  • A clear understanding of the interplay between different role-players involved in the game capturing and removal operation in the conservation environment is essential for successfully completing this unit standard.

  • UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY
As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this unit standard was Reregistered in 2012; 2015.

    UNIT STANDARD NOTES
Participation in game capture and removal operations for a variety capturing techniques is required for a learner to be deemed competent against the outcomes embedded in this unit standard. The variety of techniques should include: passive capture, darting, baiting and trapping and driving captures.

    Values:

Demonstration of the knowledge and skills outlined in this unit standard must be consistent with the principles of:
  • Maintaining essential ecological processes and life-support systems.
  • Maintaining genetic, species and ecosystem diversity.
  • Considering ecological and social rights and responsibilities, whilst ensuring sustainable utilisation of species and ecosystems.

The intention is to yield the greatest sustainable and equitable benefit to present generations whilst maintaining the potential to meet the needs and aspirations of future generations.
