PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard will be useful for people who are responsible for the design of slope/highwalls in open pit mining operations.

This unit standard is intended to promote general skills and enable re-establishment of stability after a slope/highwall failure in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of geotechnical data collection relating to the slope/highwall that has failed.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of evaluation required of the geotechnical data to determine the most probable mechanism of failure.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of communication required of remedial measures.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Communication and Mathematical literacy at NQF Level 3.
