PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are responsible for starting and taking control of a winder. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the specific requirements pertaining to the starting and taking control of a winder.
  • Prepare to and start to take control of a winder.

    Explain the specific requirements pertaining to the starting and taking control of a winder. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The requirements regarding illumination, fencing, guards, notices, and symbolic signs, are explained in terms of legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The actions to be taken in the event of non compliance with illumination, fencing, guards, notices, and symbolic signs requirements, are explained in terms of their consequences for safety, legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The components to be observed to verify the functionality of the lubrication and cooling systems are explained in terms of legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The actions to be taken in the event of non compliance with the functionality of the lubrication and cooling systems are explained in terms of their consequences for safety, legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The requirements regarding logbook entries and special instructions are explained in terms of legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The consequences for safety if requirements regarding logbook entries and special instructions are not adhered to are explained in terms of legal, site-specific and operational requirements.

    The indicators that give warning regarding defects in the electrical system are explained in terms of legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    The effects to the operation of the winder if the defects are not dealt with in accordance with requirements are explained in terms of legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

  • Defective braking system.
  • Defective motor generator set.
  • Defective power supply.
  • Defective cooling and lubrication system.
  • Defective safety circuit.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The required fit for purpose personal protective equipment is used in accordance with legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A visual inspection of the mechanical and electrical components is conducted in terms of operational effectiveness and defects are dealt with in accordance with legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Inspection must include the following:
  • Drums and winding ropes.
  • Brakes and clutches.
  • Shafts and couplings.
  • Motors.
  • Control levers.
  • Electrical and mechanical safety devices.
  • Lubrication and cooling systems.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The auxiliary and main circuit breakers are closed and the electrical and mechanical indicators are checked to verify the operational effectiveness of auxiliary equipment in accordance with legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Defects to auxiliary, main circuit breakers and; electrical and mechanical indicators are dealt with in accordance with legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Pre-operational test are conducted in accordance with legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Pre-operational checks include brake holding power, testing and handling of controls, applied amperage, steadfastness of drum on which the brake is tested.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Reports are completed and submitted to the designated persons in the correct format and within the time limit, in accordance with site-specific and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Interpersonal interaction is conducted in a positive consistent manner with specific requirements that promote effective teamwork.

    Notes to Assessors:

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember, we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence of the prescribed type and quality as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate is able to achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
