PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this unit standard will be able to conduct an effective practical demonstration of skills that are drawn from the field of lifeguarding in South Africa. The benefit to the learner will be the practice and improvement of relevant lifeguarding skills as well as the ability to provide an educational service related to lifeguarding. The sub-field will benefit by having wider public access to the operations of lifeguards as well as developing interest for new entrants into the field and also educating members of the public on issues related to their own safety.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Select, develop and research relevant skills from the field of lifeguarding.
  • Prepare an outdoor event where lifeguarding can be demonstrated.
  • Present the practical demonstration with suitable communication to the audience.
  • Conduct a question and answer session with appropriate public education.

    Select, develop and research significant skills from the field of lifeguarding. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Interests of a target audience are identified and a suitable skills demonstration is selected. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The skills should be chosen from lifeguarding within the scope of all activities related to the prevention of drowning and the undertaking of rescues.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The demonstration is designed to accommodate the identified interests and objectives of the event. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Research is undertaken by use of a variety of methodologies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Selected lifeguarding skills are practiced or revised until technically mastered. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare an outdoor event where lifeguarding can be demonstrated.

    Expected audience numbers are calculated in order to properly prepare and conduct the demonstration.

    A suitable site is selected and safety is checked in compliance with organisational policy.

    Demonstration participants are properly briefed and ability to perform checked.

    Equipment is set out and checked for safety and effectiveness during the demonstration.

    The audience is communicated with throughout the event in order to explain the demonstration as well as educate, inform and entertain the audience in order to promote lifeguarding and public aquatic safety.

    The skills demonstration is introduced and clarified during the process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Audience involvement is promoted at suitable times during the demonstration. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Unwelcome interference or discomforts are minimised in order to ensure event objectives are met.

    View of activities, sun glare, noise pollution, audibility.
