PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons who are responsible for providing assistance to the Geologist during the geological mapping of an underground workplace.

Persons credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate the knowledge required to assist in geological mapping procedure in an underground workplace.
  • Prepare to assist in geological mapping procedures.
  • Assist in geological mapping procedures.
  • Conduct post mapping activities and compile a report. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1.
  • Knowledge of the relevant sampling tools and their use in the sampling process to an NQF Level 1.
  • Understanding of the relevant legal requirements on occupational health and safety matters to an NQF Level 1.
  • Understanding of the principle rock and mineral types and structural features to an NQF Level 1.
  • Understanding of the relevant stratigraphy of the associated mineral deposit to an NQF Level 1.

    Demonstrate the knowledge required to assist in geological mapping procedures in an underground workplace.

    The accepted principles laying out tapes are explained in terms of operational procedures.

    The accepted principles for collecting a geological sample are explained in terms of operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The contents and requirements of the work instruction and the consequences of non-compliance with the requirements are described in terms of the potential effect on the mapping procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of laying out the tapes and collecting a geological sample in accordance with the accepted procedures is described in terms of the effect on the mapping results, future mining activities and the occupational health and safety of personnel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The safety aspects when travelling to and working in an underground workplace are explained in terms of legal and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The stratigraphy of the economic relevant deposit is described in terms of the associated structural features. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The effect if the structural geological parameters are not adequately identified and recorded is explained with respect to the occupational health and safety of personnel.

    Permission to enter the workplace, when required, is obtained in accordance with laid down procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal protective equipment is selected and examined for any defects and used in accordance with legal and laid down procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Defective personal protective equipment is dealt with in accordance with laid down procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The tools, materials and equipment required are selected, examined and verified in accordance with the work instruction received. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Defective tools, materials and equipment are dealt with in accordance with laid down procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Potential and actual hazardous and sub-standard conditions found during the examination of the workplace are dealt with in accordance with laid down procedures.

  • Slippery and uneven surfaces.
  • Electricity in close proximity to water.
  • Excessive accumulation of water.
  • Poor visibility, excessive gradients.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Work related hazards and associated risks that have an effect on a safe and healthy work environment are dealt with in accordance with laid down procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Consequences must include those for:
  • Eye/facial injuries.
  • Hand and foot injuries.
  • Incorrect lifting procedures and back injuries.
  • Chemical burns.
  • Inhalation of noxious and toxic gases.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The tools, materials and equipment required are used in accordance with laid down procedures and manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tapes are laid out in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Samples are collected in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The details of the mapping/sampling locality are determined and recorded in accordance with the laid down procedure in the required format. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

  • Co-ordinates of the selected mapping/sampling location.
  • Orientation of the mapping/sampling location.
  • Reference survey point(s).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The tools, materials and equipment are cleaned and ensured to be ready for future use in accordance with operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The workplace is cleaned to comply with documented and recognised good housekeeping practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The necessary report(s) are compiled in the required format and communicated to the relevant personnel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The completion of the work is communicated to the relevant personnel, when required and anomalous conditions emphasised. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

  • The ability to identify and recognise anomalous conditions that affects the reliability of the geological mapping information. (Defective tape measures, immovable obstacles, dangerous mining conditions).
  • An understanding that the learner's output can have a significant effect on the mapping/sampling process and processing of the geological data where the data is utilised for geological modelling purposes.
