PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this Unit Standard are able to maintain the hygiene and safety of a fitness facility. They will also be able to carry out preventative maintenance of fitness equipment, this ensuring the safety and efficient running of the fitness environment and its apparatus.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Maintain the safety, hygiene and efficiency of a sport and fitness environment or facility.
  • Identify the elements of maintenance and create an inventory to facilitate effective maintenance.
  • Supervise the preparation of a safe fitness and sport environment.

    On completion of this unit standard the learner should be ready to develop learning in further processes related to maintenance of a sport or fitness environment and equipment.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify the elements of maintenance and create an inventory to facilitate effective maintenance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of maintenance is defined with reference to costs, safety and sustainability of the equipment and a roster drawn up to schedule maintenance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Environment is checked regularly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Servicing of equipment is carried out in accordance with its safe, efficient and effective use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Records of in-house servicing and maintenance, are kept. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Supervise the preparation of a safe fitness and sport environment.

    A safe, risk free environment is secured for optimum use of the environment and equipment.

    Equipment is checked for safety, handled, stored and erected according to manufacturer's and industry requirements.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed against this unit standard (including through RPL) may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA), or one with an appropriate memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the relevant ETQA.
