PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard allows the qualifying learner to understand and apply the principles and philosophy of including community arts into a community based recreation programme. The learner will be able to incorporate a variety of arts related activities to achieve a balanced recreation programme to ensure increased participation in a community.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the values and philosophy upon which community arts are based.
  • Describe the roles of the community arts or cultural worker in relation to the community arts process.
  • Facilitate a community arts project with a specified group in a community.
  • Explain the processes of community development and how these relate to the principles of community arts.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Community arts is also known as cultural work and cultural democracy.
  • A community may pertain to ethnicity, gender, age, geographic boundaries, workplace, special need, special interest.
  • The principles of community arts include establishing culturally appropriate processes which enable diverse communities to develop and explore their own expression, images, voice, celebration, and commemoration.
  • The community arts or cultural worker may have knowledge and skills as one of or a combination of the following: a visual artist, songwriter, singer, dancer, video or film maker, writer, theatre worker, sculptor, banner maker, facilitator, crafts person, performance artist, arts administrator, kite maker.
  • Processes of community arts include: research; consultation; networking; power sharing; encouraging autonomy; linking disciplines (art, design, engineering, health, parks); recruitment of local resource people; project development; implementation, project coordination, facilitation; increasing political awareness and empowerment.
  • Knowledge and skill in the area of community arts may be required of people working in community arts for a number of reasons, including:
    > Providing a conceptual foundation for practice in community arts.
    > Providing a body of knowledge on which community arts as a profession is based.
    > Providing an historical and philosophical context for community arts.
    > Helping to define the parameters of community arts.
    > Providing a basis for justifying the existence of community arts, and the allocation of resources.
    > Providing a basis for justifying policy and provision.
    > Providing a background for decision-making regarding policy and provision.
    > Providing a basis for forecasting trends in community arts and the impact of community arts on other parts of society.
