The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard will be able to interpret and make adjustments to maintain the correct chemical dosage system for quality water.

Learners credited with this unit standard are capable of:
  • Explaining the process of chlorination to disinfect water.
  • Operating on-site chlorine process.
  • Connecting and disconnecting chlorine cylinders.
  • Calculating the average chlorine dosages.

    Explain the process of chlorination to disinfect water.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The purpose of chlorination is explained within the context of maintaining quality water. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The chlorination process is optimised and managed in terms of the source compound of chlorine, its production and properties, storage and handling. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The impact of pH on chlorination is optimised and managed in terms of disinfection efficiency and hypochlorous acid levels. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The effectiveness of chlorine compounds as disinfectants is optimised and managed in terms of pathogen kill rates, chlorine levels, and time. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain the factors affecting chlorine effectiveness.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Operating parameters are controlled in order to meet dosage specifications in accordance with works policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Chemical interferences are identified and explained in order to make adjustments to effective chlorination. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Chemical interferences refer to but are not limited to pH, ammonia, nitrates and organics.

    Components of chlorinators are identified and explained in terms of their uses.

    Components refer to but are not limited to rotometer, venturi, and pressure relief valve and pressure gates.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Knowledge of electrolyses is demonstrated in terms of the formation of chlorine compounds. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Forms of chlorine are identified and described in terms of their uses. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Forms of chlorine include but are not limited to gaseous chlorine, on-site chlorine dioxide generators; solid calcium hypochlrorite tablets and liquid sodium hypochlorite (bleach).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The performance of disinfection is evaluated based on the removal efficiency of microbial organisms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Critical performance parameters are explained in terms of chlorine dosage and chlorine residual.

    Safety measures are applied when connecting and disconnecting chlorine cylinders in accordance with organizational work policies and procedures.

    Fittings are identified and explained for connection and disconnection of cylinders.

    Tools required to change cylinders are identified and described in terms of their uses.

    Steps to disconnect and connect are explained and applies in accordance with work policies and procedures.

    The purpose of calculating chlorine dosage rates is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Daily dosage rates are calculated using the rotometer readings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Chlorine demand is determined to maintain the required dosage amount.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of recording chlorine dosage is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Adjustments made on the chlorinator are recorded using residual measurements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Changes made on the drum cylinders are recorded for future use.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA`s policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise.
