PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is to enable learners to understand the prevention and possible investigation of Family Violence and Child Protection and sexual offences related crimes. The unit standard will enable learners to describe the current regulatory framework pertaining to the prevention and investigation of crimes related to Family Violence and Child Protection and sexual offences. The learner will be able to describe the functions and roles of role-players and will be able to conduct interviews with victims, witnesses and suspects.

  • Examine the purpose of role-players.
  • Manage an interview with victim.
  • Conduct an investigation.
  • Prepare role-players for court.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Current international conventions related to Family Violence, Child Protection and sexual offences are described in terms of their influence in South African. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Current international conventions include but are not limited to the United Nation's convention on the rights of children, the Hague Convention (Parental abduction), CEDAW (Convention on the eradication of abuse of women), additional protocol on trafficking of human beings (UN Convention on organized crime) and the role of Interpol.

    Examine the purpose of role-players. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Role-players include but are not limited to internal and external such as psychologist, medical examiner, social workers and investigating officers.

    Role-players are examined in relation to their role and functions.

    Types of assistance provided by role-players are described in line with their mandates and authority.

    The role of the investigator is assessed in line with the allocated functions.

    Manage an interview with victims, witnesses and suspects.

    Victims include but are not limited to children and elderly people.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Psychological developmental aspects to be considered during the investigation are described in terms of their possible influences on the interview. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Manner in which traumatized victims and witnesses are dealt with is evaluated in order to ascertain whether the appropriate method has been used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Manner in which the types of suspects are dealt with is evaluated in order to ascertain whether the appropriate method has been used. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Types of suspects include but are not limited to sexual offenders and violent offenders.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An interview is conducted by applying interviewing skills in a structured scenario. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Interview must be conducted with a victim, witness and offender.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Crimes related to Family Violence, Child Protection and sexual offences are described with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Crimes include but are not limited to the following clusters:
  • Sexual offence (such as Rape), Person directed offences (such as Assault), Illegal removals (such as Kidnapping) and Electronic media facilitate crimes (such as electronic devices utilized for child pornography related offences).
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Behavioural patterns and offences relating to syndromes are assessed in terms of their potential influence on children. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Behavioural patterns include but are not limited to Shaken baby syndrome, Munchausen syndrome by Proxy and Battered baby syndrome.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Investigation guidelines are applied during the investigation of Family Violence, Child Protection and sexual offences cases.

    Prepare role-players for court.

    The concept of intermediary system is explained in terms of its purpose. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Methods of preparing role-players for a court sessions is evaluated in order to select a method. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The procedures to oppose bail applications are assessed in line with current legal prescripts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Aspects to consider when presenting evidence in a court is examined in a structured scenario. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual who wishes to be assessed against this unit standard (including assessment of RPL) may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA. Assessors must be competent in the outcome of the Unit Standard.
