PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is useful for people who intend following a career in the diamond processing sector, or are required to handle diamond gemstones in the performance of the polishing processes.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Describe the general requirements for safeguarding diamonds in the workplace.
  • Explain the implications of receiving and issuing of diamonds in the workplace.
  • Explain the importance of and the key features of the Kimberley process.
  • Describe the rights of an owner and employees in taking measures to safeguard diamonds.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth of the mining and minerals sector, particularly in the aspect of beneficiation.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding of the diamond processing industry in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The general requirements of the law are described regarding possession of diamonds, licensing of ownership and premises. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Diamonds must include:
  • Rough diamonds.
  • Semi-polished diamonds.
  • Polished diamonds.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    General principles for maintaining security of diamonds in the workplace are explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Security of diamonds must include:
  • Safeguarding of stones.
  • Allocation of stones received to the correct parcels.
  • Possession of stones other than those belonging to the licensee.
  • Un-mounted diamond imitations or simulants.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of deviating from good security practices are described in terms of potential impact on the employment relationship, the well being of the organisation and compliance with the law.

    Explain the implications of receiving and issuing of diamonds in the workplace.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The principles of recording the transfer of diamonds are described and the obligations on the person in possession are explained.

    Practices are described in terms of the workplace specific security system and requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Good working practices to safeguard diamonds during the processing of polishing are described.

    Explain the importance of and the key features of the Kimberley process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The significance of the Kimberley process is explained in terms of the requirement to provide comfort to purchasers about the origin of diamonds and self-regulatory measures undertaken by the industry. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The steps in the Kimberley process are outlined, with explanation of the specific requirements for compliance and the system of warranties. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of non-compliance is explained in relation to industry requirements and the value and marketability of the polished gemstones. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Describe the rights of an owner and employees in taking measures to safeguard diamonds. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The measures that an owner may take to safeguard diamonds are described in terms of rights under the law, good working practices and maintenance of sound industrial relations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The rights of an employee are described in terms of limitations on the employer's right of search, the right to privacy, protection under the law and sound industrial relations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The obligations of the employee are explained in terms of the security procedures and the employment contract. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of deviations from the law and procedures are described.
