PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is useful for people who intend following a career in the diamond processing sector and who are required to top lap diamond gemstones. It is for persons required to finish the four top corners and four bazeels on diamond gemstones after top blocking has occurred. This process is known as top lapping.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify the equipment and tools used to perform top lapping on diamond gemstones and describe their application.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the structure of diamond gemstones and the implications for polishing sawn stones.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the structure of diamond gemstones and the implications for polishing makeable stones.
  • Set and clamp diamond gemstones for top lapping.
  • Finish the four top corners and four bazeels on diamond gemstones.
  • Conduct post-top-lapping cleaning, checking and security activities.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth of the mining and minerals sector, particularly in the aspect of beneficiation.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding of the diamond processing industry in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope and context applies to the conversion of rough diamond gemstones into cut and polished diamond gemstones for sale into local and international markets.

    This unit standard applies to persons polishing uncomplicated sawn and makeable diamond gemstones under general supervision, or where the person performing the activity deals with complicated sawn or makeable diamond gemstones only under close direction of a supervisor.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of deviating from workplace specific practices are described in terms of potential impact on health, safety, equipment, products and productivity.

    Four points in sawn stones are identified in different diamond types from drawings.

    The polishing grains in four point sawn stones are identified in terms of the crystallography of diamonds.

    Problems that can be encountered when polishing four point sawn stones are described in terms of types of problems, key features, implications for polishing and methods to overcome such problems.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment is selected and applied according to required standards of occupational health and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Stones received are set in appropriate pots and located in polishing tangs for top lapping according to workplace specific operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A scaiffe is ensured to have been correctly prepared for top lapping, before putting the stone on the scaiffe. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The polishing tang is set on the appropriate grain settings for top lapping the given stones. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Finish the four top corners and four bazeels on diamond gemstones.

    Stones are top lapped within defined quality and output standards.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The scaiffe is frequently checked for any defects during the process of top lapping. Remedial action is taken in line with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Weights of diamond gemstones are within the laid down tolerance levels after top lapping. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Laid down tolerance levels will be found in the employer's:
  • Work specifications.
  • Tariff agreements.

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Conduct post-top-lapping cleaning, checking and security activities. 
    OUTCOME NOTES 
    In obtaining evidence for this specific outcome, it may be assessed together with top halves, in which case this specific outcome can be assessed after top halves have been polished and without having to remove the stones from the pots after top lapping. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Diamond gemstones are removed from pots after top lapping, cleaned and inspected for quality of finish in relation to workplace specifications. Remedial action, where necessary, is taken in line with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Good housekeeping is exercised after top lapping stones. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Good housekeeping must include:
  • Clean pots, tangs and claws.
  • Replace pots, claws and tangs into correct storage facilities.
  • Maintenance of personal protective clothing and equipment.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Diamond gemstones are accounted for after top lapping in accordance with the workplace security system. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
