PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard provides a broad introduction to the understanding of working piping drawings. It is the starting point for a learner in this sector. The focus is knowledge, skills, values and attitudes in relation to the learner's own context and experience of the world of work.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of piping draughting.
  • Read and interpret schematic drawings.
  • Read and interpret isometric layouts and flow diagrams.

    The learning outcomes in this unit standard are also able to contribute to the exit level outcomes required for this and any qualification at NQF Level 3 and may also be used as an individual learning unit where the implied competency is required. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in mathematics, engineering science and engineering drawing at NQF Level 2 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Piping components will include reducers, tees, caps, couplings, plugs, swages, unions, elbows, flanges, valves, pumps and vessels.
  • Flow diagrams of systems will include process flow diagrams, mechanical flow diagrams, utility flow diagrams, mark numbers and flow arrow-types.

    Terminology as applicable to piping draughting is explained and its uses described.

    The history of conveying fluids, materials of construction, size, types of manufacturing of pipes and connections are explained.

    Read and interpret schematic drawings.

    Piping components are identified and described in accordance with accepted definitions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A schematic view of piping layouts is read and interpreted to scale. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An isometric drawing is interpreted within agreed timeframes. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Identify and describe isometric layouts and flow diagrams.

    An ISO layout of piping installations is read and interpreted within agreed timeframes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Process, mechanical and utility flow diagrams are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Mark numbers, flow arrows, line size and dimensions are read and interpreted as they are inserted into the drawing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Flow sheet symbols and diagrams applicable to instrumentation are interpreted within agreed time frames.

    Assessors should keep the following general principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember, we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessments at title level are unmanageable, focus the assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, directness, authenticity, sufficiency, openness and consistency.
