PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are responsible for ensuring excavation stability with support installation in a tunnel development in shallow and deep geotechnical conditions.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of support installation to achieve excavation stability.
  • Prepare for support installation.
  • Install support.
  • Conduct a post-installation procedure.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth of the mining and minerals sector.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and demonstrating a basic understanding of principles of monitoring and instrumentation and the basic measurement from installed instrumentation in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following:
  • Outcomes related to National Introductory Certificate to Mining and Minerals at NQF Level 1.
  • Communication skills at NQF Level 1.
  • Knowledge of strata (identification of strata) at NQF Level 1.
  • Use relevant tools and measuring instruments at NQF level 1.
