PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for people who counsel specifically in the area of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in different counselling contexts where clients are enabled to go through the process of finding solutions to their concerns. It is intended for learners who are not registered professionals such as qualified psychologist and social workers. It will be useful for counsellors in a variety of counselling contexts including, but not limited to, schools, telephone counselling, Non-Governmental Organisations, Faith Based Organisations, the South African Police Service, Counselling Call Centres, Hospitals, Clinics and Support Agencies, Sports Centres, Education and Training facilities, Government and Health and Social Services facilities. It should develop learners who know their scope of practice, behave ethically in a counselling context, conform to minimum standards and know when to refer a client.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Discussing the emotional and spiritual needs of individuals infected or affected by HIV and AIDS.
  • Discussing the physical and practical needs of individuals affected by HIV and AIDS.
  • Explaining issues on the death of a spouse, parent or caregiver.
  • Explaining basic rights and how to access services.
  • Explaining how relationships are affected by HIV and AIDS. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is recommended that learners are competent in Communication at NQF Level 3.

    Discuss the emotional and spiritual needs of individuals infected or affected by HIV. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Emotional and spiritual needs at a time of loss or bereavement are described with reference to stages associated with loss and bereavement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Effective communication skills are used to assist the individual to identify and work through fears and concerns. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The emotional impact of HIV and AIDS on an individual is explained with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Emotional impact includes but is not limited to depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, denial, isolating self and associated behavioural changes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Changes in perception of self in an infected individual's are investigated with reference to self esteem, body image and sexuality. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Realistic expectations and limitations of the counsellor are identified in a specific situation to facilitate a positive outcome.

    Discuss the physical and practical needs of individuals affected by HIV and AIDS.

    The basic physical needs of an affected individual are identified and matched to an appropriate support and referral system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Avenues for accessing the necessary support are explained for a specific geographic area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The Universal Precautions are explained to a specific client using appropriate language. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain issues on the death of a spouse, parent or caregiver.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Practical actions to be taken on the death of an individual from HIV related conditions are explained with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Practical actions relate to aspects such as funeral policies, burial societies, Insurance policies and medical scheme membership, death certificates and informing financial institutions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Issues relating to wills, bequests and customary law on the death of an individual are discussed with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Cultural values and practices associated with death and dying are discussed with due regard for the use of acceptable terminology. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Explain basic rights and how to access services.

    The procedure for accessing basic grants is explained and an indication is given of the documents required in the process.

    Workplace rights relating to HIV and AIDS are explained with reference to leave conditions, termination of employment, pensions and confidentiality.

    The rights of children to basic services are explained with examples.

    Employee Assistance Programmes and services available in the workplace are investigated for a specific employer.
