PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

This unit standard is aimed at individuals involved in the ignition, control and extinguishing of security and prescribed types of fires through the application of appropriate techniques and actions under direction. The standard enables the relevant knowledge and skills required to enable the use of fire both as an ecological management tool for biodiversity and sustainability as well a security burning to protect valuable assets including man-made and natural resources. The qualifying learner will also combat unwanted wild fires (accidental/deliberate fires) unless already out of control.

This competence enables the qualifying learner to assist management in using fire as both an ecological management tool for biodiversity and sustainability as well as security burning to protect valuable assets. Assets include both man-made and natural resources. Achieving this unit standard will enhance the cost-effective management of conservation areas including the manipulation of habitats, effecting biodiversity as well as ensuring the safety of those areas. This competence will enhance employability of the qualifying learner.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements.

Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA. External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

How weather fuel loads and topography can influence fire behaviour (basic).

Reasons for applying a particular burn strategy according to the conservation area's fire programme (prescribed burning for specific ecological objective(s), security burning reasons, why fight wild fires, etc).

Differing fire team responsibilities and duties-fire boss, initiator, suppressors, drivers.

Securing valuable assets-buildings, borehole pumps, fire sensitive zones/sites.

Assist with compiling post fire report by providing the data (when, where, who, type of fire, weather).

Using basic fire-fighting equipment (radio, knapsack sprays, beaters, drip-torches.) efficiently and effectively.

Know the boundaries of the conservation area.

Know the road network and fire-breaks.

Obstacles to potential spread/retardation of fire e.g. rivers, game paths.

Local areas/local key species sensitive to fire.
