PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate an understanding of occupational health, safety and environmental legislation in the transport environment. H/she will also be able to demonstrate an understanding of safe working practices in the transport environment and/or understand and explain emergency procedures.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of personal health, safety and environmental legislation.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of safe working practices in the transport environment.
  • Understanding safety and security emergency procedures. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is desirable for learners wishing to achieve this unit standard to be competent at:
  • Communication at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of personal health, safety and environmental legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The purpose of safety, health and environmental legislation in the workplace is explained according to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Statutory Regulations and the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The employer`s and employee`s rights and responsibilities regarding safety in the workplace are explained in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety signs and symbols are identified and their purpose explained in terms of safety regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the safety of people. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of safety signs and symbols includes, but is not limited to:
  • Dangerous goods, codes, safety signs and emergency signs.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Colour codes are identified and the purpose of each is explained in compliance with factory safety regulations and the Occupational Health and Safety Act. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate an understanding of safe working practices in the transport environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Personal protective clothing and safety equipment are identified and its purpose explained according to
    site-specific safety requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of personal protective clothing and equipment include, but is not limited to:
  • Safety gear for the body, for the head, eyes, arms, hands, legs and feet.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Handling and lifting techniques of heavy objects are demonstrated according to personal safety principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Personal safety practices regarding workplace equipment within scope of work are identified according to standard operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of workplace equipment includes, but is not limited to:
  • Winch, forklift, hyster, conveyer belt, pallet lifter and motorised step.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The work environment and equipment are prepared and maintained according to standard operating safety requirements and site-specific safety regulations and environmental legislation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Understand safety and security emergency procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safety and emergency procedures within the workplace are identified and described according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose and responsibilities of a safety and/or security emergency representative are explained according to organisational policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The procedures for reporting emergencies to the emergency representative are identified and described according to standard operating procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance (ETQA) body.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.

    UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA 
  • Assessors must be registered as assessors with a relevant ETQA or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessors must be in possession of a relevant qualification at a minimum of National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 2.
