PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is to enable stock not for re-sale to be monitored and controlled and for order procedures to be implemented. The individual should develop competent usage of the appropriate policy and procedure and skills relevant to stock control. The sub-field should develop an ability to improve equipment availability, within acceptable cost levels, by maintaining optimum stock ranges and levels, with minimum wastage and loss. For this unit standard the term "stock" relates to spares, parts and other items used to ensure smooth and uninterrupted running of operations.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Maintain optimum stock range and levels.
  • Implement ordering procedures.
  • Monitor stock storage and movement.
  • Make appropriate use of documentation.

    On completion of this unit standard the learner should be ready to develop learning in further processes related to ensuring smooth and uninterrupted running of operations.

    The typical scope and context of this unit standard is the implementing of policy and procedure related to maintaining stock not for re-sale, relevant to any South African workplace. For this unit standard the term "stock" relates to spares, parts and other items used to ensure smooth and uninterrupted running of operations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Stock range and levels are monitored to ensure the optimum stock is maintained in accordance with planned and expected use/sale. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Stock counts are conducted at appropriate time intervals to ensure that records correctly reflect actual stock held. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Policy and procedure are adhered to when maintaining stock range and levels. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Implement ordering procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Range and quantity of items to be ordered are identified and calculated in order to meet optimum stock and rotation requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Suppliers are reviewed to ensure cost and quality, as well as policy, issues are considered when placing an order. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Suppliers and products are selected and an order is correctly placed and recorded with due regard to financial and administrative requirements.

    Items ordered, quantity, quality, cost, timing, special conditions etc.

    Orders placed are monitored to ensure that items are received in accordance with order.

    Stock movement is appropriately monitored to ensure optimum levels are maintained with appropriate action being taken where necessary.

    Cancel over-orders or back-orders, order more, change order, etc.

    Stock wastage and losses are minimised through proper use of control mechanisms.

    Security is implemented in a manner appropriate to the situation, stock range, stock volume and value as well as an informed evaluation of security requirements.

    Policy and procedure are correctly followed in terms of company procedure to fulfil administrative and financial requirements.
