PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to demonstrate a broad understanding of tissue conversion.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Explain the processes and equipment used in tissue conversion.
  • Demonstrate understanding of machines and equipment used.
  • Explain the utility requirements and applications.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the basic properties and uses of raw materials.

This competence will enhance the learner's employability and career options in all occupations where knowledge of tissue conversionis needed.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
    Description of required skills:
  • This unit standard has been designed as an introduction to tissue conversion and does not assume prior learning or experience.

    Literacy and mathematical literacy:
  • Persons attempting this unit standard are required to read, understand and interpret textbooks of a technical nature. It is therefore recommended that they have achieved NQF level 1 or equivalent accreditation.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The context of this unit standard covers the basic knowledge of tissue converting operations required by learners entering the pulp and paper industry.

The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because the process requires a wide range of technical skills and offers a considerable choice of procedures. A broad knowledge base incorporating some theoretical concepts, analytical interpretation of information, informed judgement and a range of sometime innovative responses to concrete but often unfamiliar problems are employed. The application of this unit standard is to qualify the person for certification in advanced trade and technical occupations.
