PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to run a baler machine in the tissue conversion environment.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Explain the fundamentals of a baler machine.
  • Run a baler machine.
  • Process bales.
  • Maintain the integrity of the work environment.

    This will ensure that the running of a baler machine to bale tissue products is performed in accordance with procedures and accepted work practices. This competence will enhance the learner's employability and career options in all occupations where knowledge of baling is needed. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Description of required skills:
  • This unit standard has been designed as an introduction to the operating of a baler and does not assume prior learning or experience.

    Literacy and mathematical literacy:
  • Persons attempting this unit standard are required to read, understand and interpret textbooks of a technical nature. It is therefore recommended that they have achieved ABET NQF Level 4/NQF Level 1 or equivalent accreditation. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The context of this unit standard includes that:
  • All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented workplace health and safety and environmental procedures (where these exceed code) for personal, product and workplace health and safety, and must meet the obligations required under current legislation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993.
  • All work practices must meet documented workplace quality management requirements. This includes the recording (by electronic or non-electronic means) of activities, events, and decisions.
  • All communications made in relation to this unit standard must be made in accordance with workplace procedures for content, recipient, timing and method.
  • For Specific Outcome 1, candidates are to be assessed against as many items in each outcome range as are available at their workplace.

    Tissue products may include but are not limited to bathroom tissue, towels, napkins, and facial tissue.

    The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because the process requires a wide range of technical skills and offers a considerable choice of procedures. A broad knowledge base incorporating some theoretical concepts, analytical interpretation of information, informed judgement and a range of sometime innovative responses to concrete but often unfamiliar problems are employed. The application of this unit standard is to qualify the person for certification in advanced trade and technical occupations.

    Understand the fundamentals of a baler machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The operation and capacity of a baler machine are described in accordance with workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Operating components and process controls of a baler machine are identified and their purpose is explained in accordance with workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Operating components may include but are not limited to control panel, main ram, bin lifter, exit door, scales, and marking systems.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Hazards and safety features associated with a baler machine are identified and explained in accordance with workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Safety features may include but are not limited to the role of protective equipment, safe lifting and pushing techniques, energy isolation procedures, lockouts, emergency stops, and guards.
  • Hazards may include but are not limited to in running nips, moving parts, automated processes, sharp edges, hot materials and machine parts, chemicals, compressed air and noise.

    The consequences of non-conformance with workplace standards are described in terms of own workplace.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safe work practices are identified and used in accordance with workplace instructions and legal requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Practices may include but are not limited to energy isolation procedures, lock outs, emergency stops, machine guarding, wearing of appropriate safety equipment.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Raw materials are loaded in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Operating procedures are followed in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Mixed bales or bales containing foreign material are re-baled in accordance with workplace instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Bales are strapped in accordance with workplace standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to no broken or loose strapping, no waste product able to escape during transportation, and no foreign material in bales.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Worn or damaged parts are identified and notified in accordance with workplace instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Operator level maintenance on the baler machine is performed in accordance with workplace instructions.

    Includes but is not limited to blowing out filters daily and maintaining oil reservoir.

    The work area is cleaned in accordance with workplace instructions.

    Baler bins and log trolleys are processed to maintain availability of spare trolleys.

    The range of housekeeping procedures includes, but is not limited to:
  • Keeping the work area neat and organised.
  • Disposing of and/or recycling worn spares in accordance with prescribed guidelines.
  • Discarding waste and empty containers in accordance with workplace and environmental guidelines.
  • Cleaning spillages in accordance with standard workplace instructions.
