PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this Unit Standard will understand the importance of understanding the properties of a range of gases to apply to their activities when doing gas installations.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Describe the different gas groupings as applicable to the gas manufacturing industry.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the application of inert/non-reactive gases.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the application of flammable gases.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the application of oxidising gases.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the application of toxic/corrosive gases.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of any learner within the gas installations environment, by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field. The knowledge, skills and understanding demonstrated in this unit standard are essential for upliftment, social and economic transformation in the gas installation environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence against literacy and mathematical literacy at ABET Level 4, NQF Level 1 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical context of this unit standard assumes an existing or new domestic or commercial gas installation site.

    The typical scope of this unit standard includes one of the following but is not limited to:
  • LPG installations.
  • Natural gas installations.
  • Compressed gas installations.
  • Medical installations.

    Properties of common gases are listed in accordance with specified requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Common gases include but are not limited to oxygen, nitrogen, natural gas, carbon monoxide, acetylene, liquid petroleum gas, hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
  • Properties include chemical formula, flammability, density, identification methods and condensation temperature.

    The four major gas groupings are described as defined by the gas manufacturing industry.

    Gas groupings include but are not limited to inert/non-reactive gases, flammable gases, oxidants and toxic/corrosive gases.

    The properties of alternative gas groupings are described in accordance with specified requirements.

    Gas groupings include but are not limited to liquefiable gases, cryogenic gases, speciality gases, poisonous gases and noble gases.
