PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for people who are tasked with the operation of a water recovery unit. It will provide learners with knowledge and skills to settle process water and both operate and maintain the recovery unit in accordance with work policies and legislation. This competence will assist in minimising water wastage, ensuring efficient water treatment processes, and will contribute to the availability of potable water to communities.

    Identify and explain the principles of water recovery unit.

    Safety procedures are identified explained and adhered to in order to alleviate hazardous situations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Recovery unit data is interpreted to determine the unit capacity needed. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Recovery unit data include but are not limited to capacity of holding tank measured in cubic meters, number of filters to be washed, volume of sludge to be withdrawn, settleable solids.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A work plan is developed based on the recovery unit data requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Recovery unit is inspected to determine the operational status of the unit.

    Problems identified are recorded for corrective action.

    Procedures for water recovery unit operation are identified and described in order to maintain water quality. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ability to calibrate and measure pH, turbidity and conductivity is demonstrated using pH, turbidity and conductivity meters. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Results of measurements are applied on the water recovery unit in terms of the operating instructions.

    Perform calculations relevant to recovery unit.

    A recovery unit is cleaned in accordance with works operations procedures to maintain operational efficiency.

    Mechanical and electrical malfunctions are recorded for reporting purposes to maintain operational efficiency. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA`s policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual unit standards as well as the integrated competence described in the qualification.

    This unit standard replaces unit standard 12333, "Operate water recovery unit and dispose of sludge", Level 2, 8 credits.

    Integrated Assessment:

    When conducting assessments, assessors must ensure that they are familiar with the full text of the unit standards being assessed. Assessors must ensure that the assessment covers the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge by developing assessment activities and tools, which are appropriate to the contexts in which the learners are working. These activities and tools may include self-assessment, peer assessment, formative and summative assessment. It may be more effective and efficient to assess a number of unit standards together in an integrated way, thus reducing the overall number of assessments and ensuring that commonalities that exist between a number of unit standards are captured in a way that makes sense for assessment.
