PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for people who operate in the hunting sector that is required to meet the legal requirements for registration as a dedicated or recreational hunter. Learners completing this unit standard will be able to undertake a recreational hunting experience and will be able to:
  • Plan and prepare a hunt thoroughly in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Trail animals.
  • Make a clean kill.
  • Complete the post-kill phase.
  • Conclude a hunt. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner is competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3. It is further required that any learner attempting this unit standard has successful completed any two of the fire-arms competency unit standard or their replacements.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare a hunt in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Relevant sections of applicable legislation and regulations are detailed in a manner that reflects understanding of legislative requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Laws, acts and provincial regulations pertaining to game and game bird hunting.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A practical demonstration is given of marksmanship relevant to the intended quarry. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A selection is made of a weapon and ammunition suited to the hunting of the intended quarry. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A description is given of the locality in which the hunt is to take place, with special reference to its most important physical features.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An outline is provided of the behaviour, anatomy and the ecology of the intended quarry, reflecting an ability to interpret this information to the requirements of the hunt. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An identification is made of the intended quarry as per the provided information. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An explanation is given of methods suited to the pursuit of the intended quarry. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Use of cover, camouflage, interpretation and use of wind direction.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Measures are identified, explained and implemented to minimise the environmental impact of the planned hunt. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Rules governing permissible hunting hours and the prohibition on the consumption of alcoholic beverages are adhered to in the execution of a recreational hunting experience.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An indication is given of the vital areas of the anatomy of the quarry. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A practical demonstration is provided of the accuracy with which vital areas are hit. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The candidate is required, in a simulated environment, to achieve a one-shot kill within his/her personal limitations. Special attention is to be paid to distance estimation and the exercising of all relevant field skills.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A wounded animal (if applicable) is despatched swiftly and humanely in a manner reflecting sound ethical principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Steps are taken to ensure that there are no humans (or other animal life) within range behind the chosen quarry, with due regard to avoiding deaths or injuries due to ricochets and deflections.

    Complete the post kill phase.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Carcass recovery is carried out with due regard to hygiene, local protocols and relevant legal requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A description is provided of the steps involved to field dress the carcass for its intended use. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Meat and/or trophy.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The carcass is skinned and the offal appropriately disposed of in terms of conventions or agreements with the landowner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Trophy management is carried out with due regard to the physical condition of the carcass, the preservation of the environment and legal requirements.

    Conclude the hunt.

    Post-hunt protocol is observed with regard to the settlement of accounts and the payment of tips, as agreed or as required by convention.

    An outline is provided of post-hunt administrative requirements that relate to necessary clerical duties.

    Steps are taken to ensure overall post-hunt safety.

    The packing up of equipment, the safe transport of firearms and ammunition, and the clearing away of all traces of the hunt.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Hunting is contextualised within a historical, environmental and ecological framework.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A brief history is provided of the activity of hunting to demonstrate the context(s) in which it has been practised. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The impact of hunting activities on the environment is discussed with special reference to nature conservation and the ecology of the area in which recreational hunting is practised. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The extinction of entire species of flora and fauna owing to indiscriminate hunting versus the contribution that responsible hunting makes to the preservation of species and habitats.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A description is given of the way in which the historical background (AC 6.1), relevant ethical principles and the potential impact on the environment and ecology (AC 6.2) inform the planning of a recreational hunting experience.

    Demonstration of the competencies outlined in this unit standard must be consistent with law and the principles of the South African Bill of Rights. The hunter must demonstrate and display by his/her actions:
  • A consistent regard for, and compliance with, the laws and regulations relating to firearms and hunting.
  • A strict implementation of safety measures related to the handling of firearms.
  • A strong ethical code related to the reduction of suffering of any quarry, a commitment to ensuring the optimal sustainability of quarry populations, and a proper regard for the environment.
  • Sober and disciplined conduct throughout the hunt.
