PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

This unit standard is intended for learners who are themselves abused or who know someone who is abused either at home or at work.

The qualifying learner is capable of:

Describing different forms of abuse.

Identifying indicators of abuse.

Identifying available support structures.

Indicating techniques for avoiding abuse.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Learners should be competent in communication at NQF Level 1.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE

The typical scope of this unit standard is physical, emotional, economic, sexual, and verbal abuse including pecking order abuse, dismissing, denying, blaming, proceduring and over controlling, threats and intimidation.

Legislation that supports the Bill of rights includes, but is not limited to, the Domestic Violence Act.

Ways in which a person may be abused physically are described and an indication is given of who the abuser could be in each situation.

Ways in which a person may be abused verbally are described and an indication is given of who the abuser could be in each situation.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

Ways in which a person may be abused emotionally are described and an indication is given of who the abuser could be in each situation.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

Ways in which a person may be abused economically are described and an indication is given of who the abuser could be in each situation.

Signs of possible physical abuse are identified with reference to the impact of frequency and pattern in identifying physical abuse.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Ways in which a person may verbally abuse another individual are described and an indication is given of the potential impact of long-term verbal abuse.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

Indicators of possible emotional abuse are identified with reference to the impact of frequency and pattern in identifying emotional abuse.

Indicators of possible economic abuse are identified for different scenarios.

The relationship between the different types of abuse is discussed with examples.

The individual's Constitutional Rights in cases of abuse are explained and an indication is given of legislation that supports the Bill of Rights in this regard.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

The services or support structures offered in a work environment or community are explained in terms of how to access these structures and the support each affords abused persons.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

Individuals who could assist and support an abused person are identified for a specific domestic unit or community.

Indicate techniques for avoiding abuse.

Factors that could be contributing or aggravating factors for abuse are identified for different situations.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Possible ways in which an individual could avoid abuse are suggested for different scenarios.

Situations where an individual should seek help are identified and an indication is given of the appropriate support needed in each situations.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

Anyone assessing a candidate against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.

Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.

Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.
