PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
In achieving this unit standard, the learner will display the competency required of a cricket coach with primary focus on activities that lead to the game of cricket in areas where the facilities may need to be adapted.

This coach will be teaching the basic skills of cricket to beginners of the sport to generate interest and to encourage new entrants. The qualified learner will be able to explain the basic components of cricket, showing understanding of the principles of the sport and be able to demonstrate the skills needed by beginners to the game of cricket, also utilising mini games and adapted games.

On achievement of this unit standard, the learner will be able to:

  • Explain the safety requirements of cricket.
  • Explain the basic laws governing the game of cricket.
  • Plan and write up cricket practice sessions.
  • Conduct basic cricket coaching activities for beginners.

    A short history of the development of cricket is given focusing on the developments in South Africa.

    The game of cricket and coaching the game are explained in terms of the benefits to the community.

    Modified games are identified and utilised to introduce beginners to the game of cricket.

    Appropriate teaching and coaching methods are used to meet the needs of the participant.
