PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who have to transport and load explosives into blast holes using a mixer-placer truck in an underground mine.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the transportation and loading of explosives using a mixer-placer truck.
  • Prepare for transporting and loading of explosives.
  • Transport and load explosives.
  • Perform post-transporting and loading activities.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth of the mining and minerals sector by transporting and loading explosives using a mixer-placer truck as part of the mining process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The explanation describes the operational requirements when preparing to transport or load explosives into blast holes using a mixer-placer truck and the consequences to occupational health and safety if specified requirements are not adhered to in accordance with mining specified requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Operational requirements must include:
  • Towing and speed limits.
  • Traffic control systems.
  • Environmental conditions i.e. heat, gases, dust, excessive water, visibility and ventilation flow.

    The required personal protective equipment is available, fit for purpose and used in accordance with its design and specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The designated parking area of the mixer-placer truck is examined for workplace hazards and such hazards are dealt with according to specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The required tools and equipment are available, fit for purpose and used according to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The pre-use and after start inspection is conducted according to the requirements on the provided checklists, defects identified are dealt with according to specified requirements.

    The numbers of persons, tools and equipment to be transported together are according to specified requirements.

    The quantity and types of explosives to be transported are according to specific requirements.

    Interpersonal interaction is positive, consistent with specified requirements and promotes effective teamwork.

    The explanation of the consequences to safety, occupational health and production, if specified requirements are not adhered to whilst transporting and loading explosives, is according to specified requirements.

    Tools and equipment are prepared and stored for subsequent use and those defective are dealt with according to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Forms, checklists or reports are complete, accurate, and in the required format and submitted to the designated person in accordance with mining specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The mixer-placer truck is parked in the designated area and secured and locked out and prepared for subsequent loading operations according to specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The explanation of the consequences to safety, occupational health and production, if specified requirements are not adhered to whilst performing post-transporting and loading activities is according to specified requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range must include consequences of non-adherence to specified requirements in terms of:
  • Preparation and storage of tools and equipment for subsequent use.
  • Completion and submission of forms, checklists or reports.

    Notes to Assessors:

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the learner is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the learner can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
