PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit is to enable learners to monitor, observe and direct crowds. These learners will be able to respond to the behaviour and direction of persons. Learners will be able inspect and provide security presence at a venue, monitor crowd size movement, stress, behaviour and safety, react to potential crowd problems and breaches of sporting etiquette, direct crowds at special events, prepare to monitor and respond to unlawful or suspicious incidents.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Perform event security.
  • React to incidents and breaches of security.
  • Direct crowds at special events.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    In this unit standard the word event refers to but is not limited to a sporting, entertainment, recreational, cultural, religious, political, business, charitable, exhibitionable, educational, organizational and similar activities hosted at a venue.

    In this unit standard the word venue refers to but is not limited to all premises used for, sporting, recreational, entertainment or similar purposes irrespective of whether the relevant events take place at an ongoing basis or on a single occasion, and to which members of the public, are invited or to which they are permitted or have access.

    Perform event security.

    A pre-event security check and orientation is conducted in a given situation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Pre-event security check refers to but is not limited to organizational specific checks, physical checks and observation checks.

    Received instructions are interpreted in order to understand duties in area of responsibility. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A situation is monitored in order to assess information for reporting purposes to role-players. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Situation refers to but is not limited to, but may include:
    > incidents, occurrences, visitors and evacuations.
  • Monitored refers to identifying, monitoring and reporting.
  • Role-players may refer to management, supervisors, Control Centre.

    Conflict handling skills are demonstrated in order to diffuse potential conflict.

    Security breaches are resolved by means of conflict resolution.

    Event control measures are applied in order to direct people as specified in a given events plan.

  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA/and any other body with whom an MOU was entered into.

  • Conflict between security staff and spectators.
