PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of identifying the various types of liquid cooling systems, to prepare and position the vehicle and to diagnose and repair system faults and to record and submit a report. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that learners are already competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

All work is performed with little or no supervision in accordance with operational, repair manual specifications and procedures and in compliance with occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.

  • Read and interpret includes the specific technical data, tools and equipment required and the type of system identified.
  • Type of system includes open and closed systems, expansion tank and conventional types.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Technical data is sourced in accordance with operational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Appropriate tools and equipment are obtained in accordance with the job instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of not using the correct technical data, tools and equipment are explained in terms of the impact on the job. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The type of cooling system is identified in terms of the job instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The operation of cooling systems is explained in terms of the key differences between particular systems. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare and position the vehicle for inspection. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Prepare includes visual inspection and the cleaning of the engine compartment.
  • Visual inspection includes perished hoses, damaged radiator core, fins, v-belts, pulleys, hose connections, fans, welsh plugs, water pump and joints.

    The vehicle is prepared and positioned in accordance with work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The cooling system is inspected in accordance with repair manual and operational procedures.

    Engine compartment is cleaned in accordance with operational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Reasons for inspecting cooling systems are explained in terms of identification of faults. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Reasons for selecting correct tools and equipment are explained in terms of the type of work and productivity. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Connect the test equipment and diagnose faults. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Test equipment includes v-belt tensioner tester, pressure tester, thermometer, hydrometer or spectrometer (antifreeze ratio tester).
  • Faults include slack v-belts, thermostat, radiator cap, sender unit, water pump, radiator blockages fan and combustion leaks.

    Test equipment is connected in accordance with repair manual procedures.

    Reasons for pressurising the cooling system are explained in terms of the system functionality.

    Potential problems caused by thermostat and radiator cap malfunctioning are explained in terms of results and remedies. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Repair and test the system.

  • Repair includes the removal of faulty components and parts and fit replacement components and parts.
  • Restore includes liquid levels, anti-freeze ratio and belt tension.

    Anti-freeze ratio is tested and adjusted in accordance with repair manual procedures and manufacturer recommendations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    V-belts are adjusted in accordance with repair manual procedures and manufacturer recommendations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Reasons for anti-freeze in the cooling system are explained in terms of the benefits of operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Implications of slack belts are explained in terms of the effect on the system.

    Apply safety procedures during the diagnosing and repair task.
