PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of identifying the various types of differentials, to assess the condition of the parts and to repair and assemble the differential and to record and submit a report. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.
  • Dismantling vehicle drive train components.

    All work is performed with little or no supervision in accordance with operational procedures, repair manual specifications and procedures in accordance with SHE legislation. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Read and interpret the job instructions. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Interpreting the job instructions include the type of differential, the dismantled condition, that the dismantled parts must be cleaned and that the specifications must be obtained.
  • Types of differentials include limited slip, non-spin and conventional.

    Technical data is sourced in accordance with operational procedures.

    Appropriate tools and equipment are obtained in accordance with repair manual and operational procedures.

    The consequences of not using the correct technical data, tools and equipment are explained in terms of the impact on the job.

    The type of differential is identified in terms of the vehicle make and model.

    The operation of a differential is explained in terms of the functions performed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Differential parts are cleaned in accordance with operational procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Assess the condition of the parts. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Assessing the condition includes the layout of the parts in operational sequence and to conduct a visual and physical inspection.
  • Physical inspection include measuring components for defects and wear.
  • Measuring include the use of micrometers, depth gauges, verniers, go/no-go gauges and dial gauges.

    All repair manual safety warnings and required actions before, during and after the task are adhered to.
